Combined Wetting Agents
Combined wetting agents gather the functions a pre-treatment bath needs separately into one formulation: wetting, emulsifying, dispersing and alkali tolerance. The gain is a simpler recipe. One product in the family: DK WET COMBIMIX P.
What does a combined wetting agent do?
A pre-treatment recipe is never one function. Wetting, emulsifying the spin finish, holding stripped soil in the liquor and binding water hardness are all needed in the same bath. The classical approach puts a separate product against each. A combined wetting agent gathers those functions into one formulation.
The gain is a simpler recipe: fewer items, fewer dosing lines, less weighing, less room for operator error. In small and mid-sized mills that can outweigh the chemical cost itself.

Asking for those together is a balancing problem in formulation. As emulsifying and dispersing power rise, so does the tendency to foam, which is why foam behaviour is the first selection criterion with combined products.
Where does it fit, and where does it not?
Combined wetting agents suit mills running standard fabric groups that want to keep the number of recipes down. On pre-wash, scouring and bleaching steps they give an acceptable result from a single item.
Where they do not fit is equally clear. Concentrated caustic calls for a mercerising wetting agent, dense polyester for a deaerating surfactant, heavy oil stains for an oil stain remover. A combined product replaces none of those three.
Why is foam the first criterion?
In a combined product the emulsifying and dispersing functions call for different molecular structures from the wetting function. The structures that raise soil-carrying capacity raise foam with them; in formulation the two move together.
In jets and overflow machines that becomes a direct constraint. Adding an antifoam to the recipe solves it, but it also takes back part of the simplification the combined product was bought for. When selecting, how much foam the machine tolerates comes ahead of the function list.
How is the dosage set?
With a combined product the dosage follows the most demanding function in the recipe rather than any single one. High spin finish on the cloth pulls it up through the emulsifying requirement; hard water pulls it up through the ion-binding requirement.
The sound method is to build a dosage curve on your own fabric group using hydrophilicity and cleanliness measurements. One general figure will not cover every fabric group: pending from the client.

Common questions
Does a combined product replace the sequestering agent?
If ion binding is part of the formulation it may be enough in moderately hard water. Where iron or manganese show up in the analysis, a separate sequestering agent is needed; protecting peroxide in a bleach bath is not a job to expect from a combined wetting agent.
Does combining functions cost performance?
At the extremes it does; on standard fabric groups it does not. The deciding factor is how varied your fabric range is: a narrow range favours a combined product, a wide range favours specialised ones.
At which step is a combined wetting agent used?
Pre-wash, scouring and bleaching. Use in a dyebath depends on how the formulation behaves with the dye, and it does not go into a standing recipe without a lab trial.
