Denim Washing Dispersants

3 products

In denim washing, indigo stripped off the fabric ends up loose in the bath. A dispersant keeps it in suspension so it cannot settle back onto pocket linings, sewing thread and the abraded areas of the garment.

Why is back-staining so visible on denim?

Indigo sits as a ring on the outside of the cotton yarn. Stone and enzyme washing exist to strip that outer layer in a controlled way and expose the white core underneath. That is where the contrast comes from.

The stripped indigo goes into the bath. Indigo is insoluble in water, so it stays there as fine particles in suspension. Every cellulosic surface nearby, undyed cotton most of all, is a good place for those particles to land. Pocket linings, labels, sewing thread and the abraded areas of the garment are the first to show it.

The damage is double. White components go blue-grey and the abraded areas darken again; the contrast the wash created is taken back.

What does the dispersant do?

It adsorbs onto the indigo particles and gives them a charge that makes them repel one another. Two things follow: the particles do not join into coarse aggregates, and they find it harder to approach the fibre surface.

Some products also cover the fibre surface so there is no site for the indigo to occupy. In most formulations the two mechanisms run together.

What to watch in enzyme washing?

In a cellulase wash the dispersant shares the bath with the enzyme, and two points need checking.

The first is compatibility: some surfactants reduce enzyme activity. When a recipe is built, the dispersant and the enzyme are trialled together rather than separately.

The second is pH. Acid cellulase and neutral cellulase work in different ranges, and the dispersant has to stay stable at whichever one is used. Working ranges for the Derin Kimya products are on the product pages: pending from the client.

What sets the dosage?

The amount of indigo stripped decides it. A heavy stone wash or a long enzyme cycle sends more indigo into the bath and raises the dispersant demand with it. On dark raw denim the same process produces a higher indigo load.

If the dosage is short, the effect fails by degrees: first a faint grey cast on the pocket bag, then visible blue. Dose above what is needed and the surplus is simply washed away at a cost. The product range is on the product page: pending from the client.

Products

  • DK DBS 1

Denim washing dispersant that holds stripped indigo in suspension and keeps pocket bags and seams from blueing.

  • DK DBS 2 CONC

Concentrated denim washing dispersant that controls back-staining at low dosage on deep indigo washes.

  • DK DBS 3

Denim washing dispersant, the third product in the range, set up to share a bath with an enzyme wash.

Common questions

Is a yellowed pocket lining the same problem as a blue one?

No. Blue is indigo back-staining and a dispersant controls it. Yellowing usually comes from loss of optical brightener, residual chemistry or heat in drying, and the fix lies elsewhere.

Does a dispersant weaken the stone wash effect?

Pumice and enzyme do the stripping; the dispersant only decides where the stripped dye goes. The effect is not reduced; the contrast reads cleaner.

Can back-staining be removed once it has happened?

Partly. An extra wash step with a suitable washing agent recovers some of it, but the original white does not come back. That is why the dispersant dosage is set correctly from the start.
